Obituary

Philip Joseph Morse, 91, of Danville passed away on Monday, August 8, 2022.  Born October 21, 1930, he was the son of the late James Kenneth and Jennette Marie Weaver Morse.

Phil, a native of Troy, New York, was a 1950 graduate of Lansingburgh High School where he played football, baseball, track and hockey. In addition, he played in the concert and jazz bands and was a member of the National Honor Society.

After graduation, he left New York and went to Wittenberg College in Springfield, Ohio.  After a semester of college work, he volunteered to become a Marine and served his country during the Korean Conflict.  After his service, he returned to Wittenberg College to continue his education and earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in Education.  Later Phil received his master's degree from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Phil was a COACH!

He devoted his life to coaching young men at Lebanon High School, Stubenville High School, Xavier University, Kenyon College, and Heidelberg University in Ohio.  He also coached at Coe College (Iowa), Hamburg (Germany), and Centre College in Danville, Kentucky where he became known for both football and baseball.  While coaching at Kenyon College, he recorded the best decade record in the school's football history including the 1972 undefeated team .

He spent hours on the field with his sons and other young men where he taught football, baseball, and life including his love for GOD.  After his retirement, he continued his mission by spending countless hours with his son's teams at Hopewell-Loudon HS and New London HS, both in Ohio, coaching Danville youth at the Morse Baseball and Softball Academy, and supporting the Danville High School baseball team with his knowledge and inspiration.

His inspiration to his players was obvious as many players have stayed in touch with him over the years. He always included his love for GOD and his sense of humor. He was smart, friendly, helpful, caring, giving, strong, patient, and honest.  As one young baseball player from Danville said (whistle) "Hum Babe"!!! He will live forever.

Phil is survived by his wife of 69 years, Marilyn Irene Graham Morse; 3 sons:  Glen Philip (Brenda) Morse of OH, James Charles (Janine) Morse of AL, and Paul Graham (Tamme) Morse of Danville; 4 daughters:  Lisa Marie Morse of Danville, Jennifer Irene (Tim) Kazimer of Harrodsburg, Catherine Ann (Bill) Fox of Michigan, and Angela Kay (Mark) Baxa of Danville; 2 brothers, Jack Morse of OH and Carl (Sis) Morse of NY; 2 sisters, Kay (Floyd) Haber and Betty (Ron) Schott, both of New York; 19 grandchildren: Carrie Morse, Sonya Steberl, Kelly Watts, Molly Selby, Megan Turner, Erin Piar, Courtney Piar, Whitney Cruver, Michael Morse, Anthony Morse, Bille Fox Dawson, Titus Fox, Micah Fox, Noel Fox, Abi Fox, Ashley Haley, Brian Baxa, Brady Morse and Jaycee Morse and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Lindsey Morse; and by 4 brothers:  James, Paul, Don, and Earl Morse.
