David L. Rakes, 79, of Gravel Switch passed away Sunday, October 11, 2026. Born in Bradfordsville on January 18, 1947, he was the son of the late Annie Lindsey Shannon and James Lloyd Rakes.

He worked trading, carpentry, and in auto mechanics throughout his life. He enjoyed watching westerns especially those including John Wayne and spending time outdoors and with his family.

David is survived by 5 sons: David Rakes, Jr., Ernest Rakes (Amanda), Timmy Rakes, Ricky Rakes (Clarissa), and James Rakes (Courtney) all of Boyle County; 2 daughters: Melissa (William) Boyd of Lawrenceburg and Maria Rakes of Parksville; 14 grandchildren: Kayla (David) Bottom, Megan (Zachary) New, David Lloyd Ryan Rakes, Apryl Noe, Samantha Noe, Sarah Boyd, Mary Cox, Brandy Cox, Kimberly Cox, Justin Cox, Dylan Cox (Taiwo), Bentley Rakes, Hunter Rakes, Ricky Colvin; and 6 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his 2 wives: Wanetta Bowmer Rakes and Cindy Gilpin Rakes; 1 daughter, Mary Sue; 1 grandchild, Heather; and all his siblings.

Visitation will be at W.L. Pruitt Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 10 AM until the funeral service beginning at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Chambers Cemetery.
